"This is the centre of the universe today, one for all and all for one!" So says the official hymn of the Belgrade Pride Week which kicked off in festive style with a "Sweet opening party" in club Krug on Sunday night.
Pride Week features a series of exhibitions, performances, movie screenings, workshops and public debates, under the slogan Love, Faith, Hope, and is due to last until October 6.
On Friday evening, LGBT activists staged a brief, flash mob performance in which two brides called Faith and Hope got married and kissed each other on Belgrade's main pedestrian street of Knez Mihailova. ?
Most of the passers-by liked the impromptu performance, although a few covered their children?s eyes, when they realised what was going on.
Although there have been no reported incidents so far, it remains uncertain whether the Pride Parade, which is due to take place on October 6, will go ahead owing to the now habitual security fears.
Aleksandar Vucic, the Deputy PM, said on Sunday that final decision on whether the parade would be held will be made in the next few days, following a meeting to assess the security risks between Serbia?s Bureau for the Coordination of Security Services and the Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic.
Dacic said that the Serbian government would not allow groups which threaten the gay parade to provoke violence.
"There are lots of reasons for and against holding a gay parade. Lots of people are against the parade, but no one has right to threaten it with violence," Dacic said.
In September, posters showing thugs beating a guy underneath a crossed-out LGBT flag and the threatening tag line ?"See you in October", appeared throughout Belgrade, as well as graffiti reading "Stop Gay Pride".
Last year?s parade was cancelled by the authorities following far-right threats to cause mayhem on the streets.
The 2010 Pride went ahead, but several thousand youngsters, including football fans and members of ultra-rightist organizations, threw stones and explosives at the police, injuring police officers and setting buildings and vehicles on fire.
