Teen girls less successful than boys at quitting meth in UCLA pilot ...

Methamphetamine

A UCLA-led study of adolescents receiving treatment for methamphetamine dependence has found that girls are more likely to continue using the drug during treatment than boys, suggesting that new approaches are needed for treating meth abuse among teen girls.

?

?

"The greater severity of methamphetamine problems in adolescent girls compared to boys, combined with results of studies in adults that also found women to be more susceptible to methamphetamine than men, suggests that the gender differences in methamphetamine addiction observed in adults may actually begin in adolescence," said the study's lead author, Dr. Keith Heinzerling, a health sciences assistant clinical professor of family medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

?

The clinical trial focused on use of the antidepressant bupropion for treating methamphetamine addiction. Nineteen adolescents ? nine boys and 10 girls ? with meth addiction who were receiving counseling at Behavioral Health Services were given either bupropion or placebo pills. The average age of participants was approximately 17.5 years.

?

The researchers found that the study subjects who received the antidepressant provided significantly fewer meth-free urine samples than those who were given placebos, suggesting that bupropion was an ineffective treatment for addiction in this small sample.

?

Overall, boys in both groups provided more than twice as many meth-free urine drug tests during treatment as girls in both groups.?

?

While the results did not support continued research into the use of bupropion for methamphetamine addiction, they did suggest the need for research to develop new interventions to improve the outcomes of treatment for addiction in adolescent girls, the researchers said.

?

Heinzerling noted the importance of collaborations such as the one between UCLA and Behavioral Health Services.

?

"It shows that partnerships between researchers and community organizations are critical to insuring that research is translated into improvements in the health of real people," he said.

?

Additional researchers on the study included Janette Gadzhyan, James McCracken and Steven Shoptaw, all of UCLA, and Henry van Oudheusden and Felipe Rodriguez of Behavioral Health Services Inc.

?

The research was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (grant 5 R21 DA26513).

?

Behavioral Health Services Inc. is a not-for-profit community-based health care organization providing substance abuse, mental health, drug-free transitional living, older adult, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, and related health services to the residents of Southern California.

?

The UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine?aims to advance the prevention and treatment of chronic illnesses, especially in communities with health care disparities. This includes internationally recognized research to advance the science behind addiction medicine in order to develop safer and more effective treatments for addiction. Treatment for methamphetamine addiction is available through the center at its clinics in Santa Monica and Hollywood.

?

The UCLA Department of Family Medicine?provides comprehensive primary care to entire families from newborns to seniors. It?provides low risk obstetrical services and prenatal and inpatient care at UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica, and outpatient care at the University Family Health Center in Santa Monica and the Mid-Valley Family Health Center, which is located in a Los Angeles County Health Center in Van Nuys, Calif. The department is also a leader in family medicine education, for both medical students and residents, and houses a significant research unit focusing on health care disparities among immigrant families and minority communities and other underserved populations in Los Angeles and California.

'DWTS' final four? The finale could see a shakeup

TV

There are seven remaining pairs on "Dancing With the Stars" and only three more elimination nights before the finals. So, barring any surprise double eliminations, there will be four couples -- not the traditional three -- competing in the finale on May 20.

"Dancing With the Stars"

ABC

?It?s good for that fourth couple who?ll get paid an extra couple of bucks,? pro Val Chmerkovskiy shrugged to reporters in Monday night?s post-show press line.

Derek Hough thinks it?s a good idea too.

"Honestly, it means more dances for the finals," the three-time mirror-ball champion said. ?It?s more entertainment for the viewers at home, and that?s what it?s all about.?

Hough has said in the past that it?s best to come in either fourth or first, since exiting right after the semifinals means a dancer doesn?t have to come up with two more routines for a finale that he or she may or may not win.

?I think differently about that now,? he said. ?When I said that, I might have been thinking I didn?t want to do all that hard work. But I?m of the frame of mind that it?s an absolute pleasure and joy to be able to do any dance number on the show -- every time, even for results shows.?

Recap: 'Dancing With the Stars' judges take the ballroom to the bathroom

While anything can happen between now and the finals, it seems likely that three of the four finalists will be the competition's consistently high-scoring duos: Kellie Pickler and Hough, Zendaya and Chmerkovskiy, and Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff. The fourth slot is up for grabs.

But the only sure thing right now is that Hough and Pickler won?t be going home on Tuesday night. They scored enough points on Monday to earn immunity.

But while Hough and Pickler are safe for now, the pro feels that writing off low-scorer Andy Dick before the end just might be a mistake, given the show?s passionate fan base.

?I hope the judges did Andy a favor with their (strong) comments,? Hough offered. ?If you feel that (your favorite) is being picked on, then you?re going to say to yourself, ?I?m going to vote for him!??

Destination Weddings - ArticleSnatch.com

Inflation has burned holes in the pockets of the common man but weddings are still as big and fat as ever. People are ready to spend unreasonable amount of money for exotic orchids from Amsterdam or Caviar from Russia.

People spend so lavishly on weddings these days. This was not the case a decade or two. Weddings the world over have seen a kind of monetary splash in everyone's life. But now, with capitalism raising its ugly head, there are so many nouveau riche that big weddings have to be bigger and better than every other wedding. The speed of economic growth around the Globe, which is responsible for the creation of overnight fortunes, is also creating a conspicuous, yet almost desperate type of consumption at weddings.

Today, people travel far more frequently for business, pleasure, education and employment. And as costs for weddings have increased, so have more and wealthier people are looking for exotic locales not only for honeymoons but for wedding destinations. Attribute it to rapid globalization or just to fill their albums with exotic locations, people are opting for what are called Destination Weddings.

A destination wedding is a wedding away from the homes and city of dwelling of both the bride and bridegroom. And these places could be in exotic Hawaii or the snowiest slopes of Switzerland or at weekend getaways near city in oriental India. Couples who love to travel themselves, opt for destination weddings as it gives them a chance to make their wedding special and different at the same time. The gathering could be small or huge depending on your preference and whom you would like to invite for your big day; just close family members and loved ones or friends and colleagues too.

Destination weddings give a wonderful opportunity for the couple, close family and friends to spend a few days together in exotic resorts with villas rather than just congregate in a marriage banquet hall. It gives a chance to both sets of families to acquaint with each other and to create memorable moments that would be cherished forever. The cost of a destination wedding is another reason couples may decide to plan one. If you have only a limited guest list and the location in the countryside then naturally your expenses would not be huge. But if you are going to say the beaches of Malibu, and your guest list is as long as the Nile then be ready to empty your pockets generously.

Depending on your interest and your budget, there's a destination for every couple. If you are a nature lover then you can book a resort for wedding reception, or if you are the beach bummer then a tropical beachside. Ensure that your big day doesn't get marred with under booking or grumpy guests. Book in advance so that you get a whole block reserved for you and your guests and you have a stress free destination wedding.

AT&T Optimus G Pro

AT&T this morning officially announced the LG Optimus G Pro. It'll be available starting March 10 for $199 on contract. Preorders kick off May 3 online.

We're no stranger to the Optimus G Pro, having enjoyed the Korean version for a couple months now. It's surprisingly svelte for a 5.5-inch device, and the 1080p IPS display is downright gorgeous. It's plenty snappy, too, with a Snapdragon 600 processor cranking along at 1.7 GHz.

Netflix's 'Orange is the New Black' debuting July 11th as part of its original series

Netflix's 'Orange is the New Black' debuting July 11th as part of its original series

Despite having recently introduced the likes of Hemlock Grove and House of Cards, Netflix isn't staying put and is now boosting its original content with yet another production: Orange is the New Black. The new comedic drama series, created by Weeds' own Jenji Kohan, is set to start streaming to worldwide Netflix subscribers beginning July 11th. Similar to Netflix's House of Cards, Orange is the New Black consists of thirteen episodes running at around 60 minutes -- however, the main story here won't be based on drama coming out of D.C., but rather a "world populated with unforgettable characters and no-holds-barred humor set against the backdrop of a women's prison." Be sure to peruse over the PR after the break, where you'll find more deets about the plot as well as the full cast.

The Paris beat: not all chocolat et fromage

Europe bureau chief Sara Llana writes that getting through immigration's bureaucracy in Paris is a lot harder than in her last assignment, Mexico City.

The Eiffel Tower and the sun are reflected in a tourist's sunglasses during a mild and sunny spring day in Paris, this month.

When I wrote a farewell letter to Mexico City?as I left for my new post?in Paris, I received not a few snide remarks: ?Oh, poor thing.? ?Oh, what a hardship beat.?

Well, I am here to tell you, that it is hard. At least setting up the bureau is, with far more hassle than anything I experienced while establishing the Monitor?s office in Mexico.

It?s an endless task of official stamps, translations, long lines, subway rides, closed office hours, misinformation, and rigid rules (that appear to be inexplicably bent at any given moment).

Immigration to Mexico is not exactly easy. I spent countless hours standing in lines, only to be told I didn?t have the right paperwork and that I needed to return the next day to stand in line again.

But this, I dare say, has been worse.

Per the French consulate in Boston and then a reconfirmation from the French embassy in Mexico, I will have the right to reside in France through my husband?s European citizenship. I was told (in writing) to enter France without a visa and head to the police station upon arriving.

Having dealt with the pains of immigration ? both living abroad and in the US, since I married a foreigner ? I know to call first and find out what documents are required, even when there is a list of what you need online. Except that here, there is no such place to call. Every attempt led me to the same answer: ?You will get all of the information at the prefecture assigned to you.? So I went. Only to find huddled masses, in the freezing cold of a Parisian morning, in a line that did not budge, at all, for two hours (when I finally gave up and went home). There were no officials to ask any questions, no information posted anywhere. There must be another way to get information, I assumed.

So I went with a friend to the central offices the next day, where I was told that I needed to have gotten the visa before having arrived. The consulate and the embassy, she said, were wrong. But then she added that I should go the prefecture, to find out if she was wrong. And the documents I need to bring with me? ?You need to go there and ask,? she said.

I?ve experienced variations of this story for everything we have on our to-do list, from finding an apartment (which we mercifully did in a mere 10 days), to setting up Internet service. I do think once we?re settled it will be an amazing beat, and so many parts of the French system make life so much easier than life in Mexico or the US ? but we?ve definitely got some hard steps ahead.

Reporter note: After writing this blog, I did go back to the prefecture. I stood in line for 8 hours in total. The good news is that I apparently did not need a visa prior to entrance. The bad news: I did not have all of the paperwork - I was asked for things that were not listed on the website.
