Catch the fever: It'll help you fight off infection

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

With cold and flu season almost here, the next time you're sick, think twice before taking something for your fever. That's because scientists have found more evidence that elevated body temperature helps certain types of immune cells to work better. This research is reported in the November 2011 issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology.

"An increase in body temperature has been known since ancient times to be associated with infection and inflammation," said Elizabeth A. Repasky, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Immunology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. "Since a febrile response is highly conserved in nature (even so-called cold blooded animals move to warmer places when they become ill) it would seem important that we immunologists devote more attention to this interesting response."

Scientists found that the generation and differentiation of a particular kind of lymphocyte, known as a "CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell" (capable of destroying virus-infected cells and tumor cells) is enhanced by mild fever-range hyperthermia. Specifically, their research suggests that elevated body temperature changes the T-cells' membranes which may help mediate the effects of micro-environmental temperature on cell function. To test this, researchers injected two groups of mice with an antigen, and examined the activation of T-cells following the interaction with antigen presenting cells. Body temperature in half of the mice was raised by 2 degrees centigrade, while the other half maintained a normal core body temperature. In the warmed mice, results showed a greater number of the type of CD8 T-cells capable of destroying infected cells.

"Having a fever might be uncomfortable," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, "but this research report and several others are showing that having a fever is part of an effective immune response. We had previously thought that the microbes that infect us simply can't replicate as well when we have fevers, but this new work also suggests that the immune system might be temporarily enhanced functionally when our temperatures rise with fever. Although very high body temperatures are dangerous and should be controlled, this study shows that we may need to reconsider how and when we treat most mild fevers."

Kenya, Somalia look for international help to fight Al Shabab

As much as half of Al Shabab's income comes from businesses in the Somali port city of Kismayo. Kenya and Somalia have requested international support for a naval blockade on the town.

Kenya and Somalia have issued a joint appeal for foreign assistance in their fight against Islamic militants Al Shabab, as Kenyan forces continue to launch air strikes against the group in southern Somalia.

At a meeting in Nairobi, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali of the Somali Transitional Federal Government asked for international naval support to blockade the Al Shabab-controlled port town of Kismayo in Somalia, reports The New York Times. The Islamist organization is thought to get as much as half of its income from businesses in Kismayo, CNN reports, citing United Nations estimates.

Though Kenya and Somalia's joint appeal for aid did not single out any specific countries or organizations, the Times writes that a Somali spokesman said that his country would be interested in help from NATO, which just ended its Libya operations. And a Kenyan official said that the two countries had already approached the US and European nations for assistance.

AllAfrica.com writes that the statement also raises the possibility of bringing charges of human rights violations against members of Al Shabab at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The statement said that the Somali transitional government "will seek ICC assistance in beginning immediate investigations into crimes against humanity committed by individuals within the Al-Shabaab movement with the aim of seeking their indictment...."

Kenya stepped up its campaign against Al Shabab three weeks ago, when it launched an incursion into Somalia in its first major military operation beyond Kenya's borders since the end of the colonial period. But while the Somali transitional government initially expressed concern at Kenyan troops operating within Somali borders, Somalia's Prime Minister Ali said that the two governments were now working in concert, reports The Times of South Africa.

Eddie Murphy Is Writing an Alien Abduction Comedy

eddie-murphy

The level of optimism for Eddie Murphy?s career is high right now?the highest since at least since Dreamgirls, maybe in over a decade.? Tower Heist doesn?t look god-awful.? The live Oscar stage could reinvigorate the former stand-up.? And recently, Murphy denounced his recent work in family films.? (Notwithstanding A Thousand Words, finally coming out in March after years on the shelf.)? That leaves the question of what he would like to pursue going forward.

It?s worth noting that Tower Heist was originally conceived for a cast of black comedians such as Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, Tracy Morgan, and Martin Lawrence.? The development process whitewashed the project (Ben Stiller and Matthew Broderick seem absurdly white in this context), but Murphy hasn?t abandoned the central idea.? Murphy says he is writing an alien abduction comedy he whimsically refers to as Jamal and Tyrell and Omar and Brick and Michael?s Wack-Ass Weekend.? More after the jump.

The news comes from the print version of a recent interview with Rolling Stone [transcribed by Moviehole]:

?I still want to do something like that,? Murphy says, adding that he had Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan and Martin Lawrence all lined up for that first incarnation of Tower Heist. ?I have this idea called Jamal and Tyrell and Omar and Brick and Michael?s Wack-Ass Weekend about this group of guys who get abducted by aliens on the way to the fights. I?m writing that now.?

Jamal, Tyrell, Omar, Brick, Michael.? That?s five names.? Are Murphy, Chappelle, Rock, Morgan, and Lawrence the guys?? If Wack-Ass Weekend brings Chappelle back into our lives, it will be worth it.

Outside of that possibility, the idea is independently intriguing.? To my mind, it shows Murphy is thinking creatively.? (Although, Murphy?s last extraterrestrial interactions resulted in The Adventures of Pluto Nash and Meet Dave, so?)

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, October 31, 2011.

Clearer and calmer weather is anticipated in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Monday high pressure returns to the Appalachians. Temperatures in these regions will continue to rebound back to warmer values throughout the day and should return to seasonal values by Tuesday.

In the Midwest, a disturbance in the Upper Mississippi Valley will advance eastward through the Upper Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. Areas of light to moderate rain showers will develop ahead of this system throughout parts of the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. As this system progresses eastward, high pressure over the eastern Appalachians will lift northeastward toward the Canada Maritimes during Monday evening. This exiting system, will allow rain to form along the Mid-Atlantic Coast during the evening.

Elsewhere in the East, overcast skies with embedded showers will persist in parts of southern Florida due to tropical moisture.

In the West, a cold front will move across the Northern Intermountain West and spread showers with high elevation snow through the Northwest. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 12 degrees at Mt. Washington, N.H. to a high of 84 degrees at Ramona, Calif.
