US finalizes deal to sell F-15s to Saudi Arabia

The sale of $30 billion worth of F-15SA fighter jets to Saudi Arabia has been finalized, boosting the military strength of a key U.S. ally in the Middle East to help counter Iran, the Obama administration announced Thursday.

Under the agreement, the U.S. will send Saudi Arabia 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more. Production of the aircraft, which will be manufactured by Boeing Co., will support 50,000 jobs and have a $3.5 billion annual economic impact in the U.S., the White House said.

The sale is part of a larger U.S. effort to realign its defense policies in the Persian Gulf to keep Iran in check. The announcement came as U.S. officials weighed a fresh threat from Tehran. Tehran warned this week it could disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital Persian Gulf oil transport route, if Washington levies new sanctions targeting Iran's crude exports.

The fighter jet sale is part of a larger 10-year, $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia that also includes helicopters, a broad array of missiles, bombs and delivery systems, as well as radar warning systems and night-vision goggles. Congress gave the deal the go-ahead about a year ago.

The plan initially raised concerns from pro-Israeli lawmakers, but U.S. officials reassured Congress that Israel's military edge would not be undercut by the sale. Additionally, there is now broad agreement among Israel, the Gulf Arab states and the West that Iran poses a significant and unpredictable threat.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter regional rivals. Tensions between them were further stoked earlier this year after the U.S. accused Iran of plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. in Washington earlier this year.

Saudi Arabia is already the most militarily advanced of the Arab Gulf states, one of the richest countries in the world, and central to American policy in the Middle East. It is also vital to U.S. energy security, with Saudi Arabia ranking as the third-largest source of U.S. oil imports.

The White House announced the agreement with Saudi Arabia from Hawaii, where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

Night golf plans for 30 floodlights at Gardens

Bradly Hawkless tries out night golf. Picture: MICHAEL FRANCHI

A PLAN to establish night golf facilities in Darwin city has been brought to daylight after the proposal was once again put before council.

Gardens Park Golf Links, at The Gardens, is investigating costs, legislation, planning laws and consulting the community in a bid to put the project into practice.

The plan would include installing more than 30 floodlights to light up the nine-hole course for night-golfing and functions.

Organisers say the move would extend course opening hours and increase evening activities in Darwin.

The proposal, estimated to cost a total of about $1 million about two years ago, was put before Darwin City Council recently.

But Lord Mayor Graeme Sawyer said it may be a further 18 months before the move could be approved.

"It has a long way to go yet," he said.

"The proposal is to light the first hole, and then to show that to the public and have community consultation around it.

"Then proceed to light the rest of the course."

Alderman Roger Dee, who has been leasing the course for about 25 years, first applied for the move in 2000.

It was again discussed in the confidential section of council meeting in June 2009.

Mr Dee then rejected claims the agreement was controversial despite his double role.

And Mr Sawyer then defended the secrecy, saying it was only fair to keep Mr Dee's commercial interests from competitors.

Mr Dee failed to return calls from the NT News last week.

Walters throws a wedding

Last Updated: 2:56 AM, December 24, 2011

Posted: 2:24 AM, December 24, 2011

Barbara Walters threw a wedding dinner for her hairstylist of 30 years, Bryant Renfroe, and Joseph Dwyer on Wednesday at Upper East Side restaurant Primola. Walters introduced Renfroe and Dwyer just over a year ago, and their wedding had some unexpected drama that brought Renfroe on ?The View? a day later. ?I?m having heart surgery in January,? said Renfroe, who?s also styled hair for Joan Lunden and Kathie Lee Gifford. ?So Joe and I wanted to get married before the surgery.? But they faced unexpected controversy when the chauffeur driving them to be married earlier Wednesday made some ugly remarks. ?He said, ?You?re sinning. You?re making God cry,? ? related Renfroe, who went on Walters? show Thursday to discuss the incident. Renfroe, who?s having a larger wedding party in June, didn?t let it ruin his celebration: ?It was lovely. I loved it,? he said, adding that dinner was topped off with ?a nice cake.? Guests included ABC?s Linda Finson, Bill Geddie and Jessica Stedman Guff.

Former president George H.W. Bush stumps for Romney

Former US president George H.W. Bush backs Mitt Romney for president, the Houston Chronicle reported on Thursday, an important boost for Romney from the Republican establishment less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

The comments were not a formal endorsement, but Bush told the newspaper he had known Romney for several years and also knew his father, former Michigan governor George Romney.

?I think Romney is the best choice for us,? Bush told the newspaper.

He cited Romney?s ?stability, experience, principles? and said, in a possible reference to Romney?s famously volatile rival Newt Gingrich: ?He?s a fine person. I just think he?s mature and reasonable ? not a bomb thrower.?

Romney, who has been a front runner in the race for the Republican nomination for months, is viewed as too moderate by many conservatives. He has failed to gain more than about 25 percent support in national polls as a series of rivals have surged into first place and then faded.

Romney said he had spoken to the former president and thanked him for his support.

?I?m very encouraged by the support of [former] president Bush for my candidacy,? Romney told reporters in Berlin, New Hampshire, where he was campaigning on Thursday.

Gingrich pushed past Romney into first place recently, although the former speaker of the US House of Representatives has faded partly because of withering attacks by Romney and his supporters.

Bush said he knew Gingrich fairly well and told the Chronicle: ?I?m not his biggest advocate.?

The two men had a disagreement in 1990 when recession drove the then-president to agree to new taxes, despite having vowed not to do so. Gingrich, then a Republican House leader known for strong opinions and an outspoken style, declined to appear with the Republican president.

Bush lives in Texas, but he is not backing Texas Governor Rick Perry.

?I like Perry, but he doesn?t seem to be going anywhere ? he?s not surging forward,? Bush said.

Perry succeeded Bush?s son, former US president George W. Bush, as Texas governor in 2001, but the elder Bush backed another Perry rival, US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, in the Republican gubernatorial primary last year.

The elder Bush said he could support any of the Republicans now seeking the nomination, although he expressed concern about the prospects for another Texan, the libertarian-leaning Congressman Ron Paul. Paul has moved past Gingrich in polls of Iowans likely to participate in the state?s Jan. 3 nominating caucuses.

?I want to see Obama beaten,? he said. ?I just don?t believe Ron Paul can get the nomination.?

Google halts Android 4.0.3 roll out after complaints

Google has stopped the roll out of Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update a couple of days after it issued the upgrade for Samsung Galaxy Nexus GT-I9020 and GT-I9023 devices. The announcement came after several users reported fast battery drainage issues and heavy CPU usage.

Paul Wilcox, community manager for Google help forums, said that the roll out of Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update has been paused in several regions. Google will monitor feedbacks from users on Android 4.0.3 as well.

Software engineers working on Google's Android Open Source Project pushed the first version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung Nexus S users. The Android 4.0.3 ICS build IML74K is available through OTA for US based Nexus S owners and the rest of the people have managed to download it via direct links.

Users of Nexus S smartphones with Android 4.0.3 ICS are complaining of heavy processor usage with the Android OS string. Several users also complained about rapid battery drainage issues along with no WiFi and poor GPS performance.

Samsung Nexus S is one of Google's flagship devices which focus on providing the 'pure' Android experience (free of custom skin) to developers and users. At this moment, the Android 4.0 ICS build IML74K update is meant only for the US region and doesn't have radio firmware for all regions.

We advise users to avoid downloading the Android 4.0 ICS update until it is officially pushed for the respective region.

"We've accomplished quite a bit over the past decade, so it's no small statement to say that 2011 was probably our biggest year yet," Irwin said. "I told our team that when we topped one million paid subscribers, I'd shave my head ... it was probably the best free haircut I've ever had."

Rhapsody?s music subscription service lets users stream unlimited music online or download tunes to listen to offline. The company?s library has more than 13 million songs and a subscription costs $10 a month.

Ruling party nominates Kremlin chief as Duma speaker (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia's ruling United Russia party, whose majority was reduced in this month's parliamentary election, on Saturday backed Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Naryshkin to become speaker of the State Duma (lower house), the party said.

Naryshkin, 57, whose nomination had been widely expected, will take over from Boris Gryzlov, who quit in a move apparently aimed at cooling public anger over an election opponents say was rigged in United Russia's favor.

The speaker's post is seen as a nominal one in the top-down "vertical of power" designed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is expected to return to the Kremlin after a presidential election next March 4.

Naryshkin, like Putin a native of St Petersburg, worked in the 1980s in the economic attache's department of the Soviet embassy in Belgium. He speaks fluent English and French.

Since 2008 he has headed the Kremlin administration, where he was viewed as a trusted Putin aide capable of "minding" the presidency of Dmitry Medvedev, a Putin protege who is stepping down to switch roles and become prime minister.

Naryshkin's deputy, Vladislav Surkov, a key ideologist of Russia's political system, has taken over as the Kremlin's acting chief of staff.

United Russia won the December 4 parliamentary election, but its share of the official vote slipped to barely 50 percent from 64 percent in 2007, reducing its majority to just 13 seats.

The election results have been challenged by opposition parties that won entry to parliament and the extra-parliamentary opposition, who allege that United Russia's share of the vote was inflated by ballot stuffing and other electoral fraud.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Russian cities last week to demand a rerun of the elections - the largest political protests during Putin's 12-year-old rule.

Parliament is due to reconvene on December 21 and hold a vote to elect the speaker. Medvedev will address lawmakers and other dignitaries in an annual address the following day.

A further round of election protests is planned for next Saturday, December 24, with the authorities giving permission for 50,000 to gather in Moscow.

Putin's challenger vows to pardon Khodorkovsky (AP)

MOSCOW ? The Russian billionaire who plans to challenge Vladimir Putin in Russia's presidential election said Thursday that his first move if elected will be to pardon jailed tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Mikhail Prokhorov said he would also allow free registration of opposition parties and restore popular elections of provincial governors if he wins March's vote. Putin has marginalized opposition forces, tightened election rules and abolished direct elections of governors.

The 46-year-old Prokhorov, estimated to be worth $18 billion, made his fortune in metals, banking and media. He also owns 80 percent in the New Jersey Nets. Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, has been in jail since 2003 on tax evasion and fraud charges seen as a punishment for defying Putin's power.

Khodorkovsky's lawyers have lost numerous appeals to clear him of the charges.

Prokhorov's surprise announcement this week that he would seek the presidency came in the wake of nationwide protests over alleged fraud in national parliament elections. The protests, which included a throng of tens of thousands in Moscow, were an unprecedented public display of widespread discontent with the man who has dominated Russian politics for a dozen years as president and later as prime minister.

Putin stepped down as president in 2008 because of term limits, but seeks to return to the Kremlin in the March 4 election.

Speaking at a meeting with supporters at a meeting to nominate him for the race, Prokhorov hailed last weekend's protest in Moscow against vote fraud, which attracted tens of thousands in the largest show of discontent in 20 years.

"I deeply understand the demands and the strivings of the people who took to the streets," Prokhorov told reporters, adding that he may join a follow-up protest later this month.

Prokhorov said that "expert opinion" has prompted him to believe that the Dec. 4 parliamentary election was unfair and rigged. But he argued for a legal response to the fraud allegations.

The tycoon avoided criticizing Putin directly, but said he wasn't afraid to challenge his power: "Putin is a serious rival, but I'm not afraid of competition."

Prokhorov, noted for his playboy lifestyle, also humorously noted that he might need to settle down and find a potential first lady.

"I'm ready even for this ? if that's necessary for my country and for winning the presidential election."

Prokhorov's presidential bid follows his botched performance before the parliamentary election when he formed a liberal political party with the Kremlin's tacit support but abandoned it under what he called Kremlin pressure.

Some observers alleged that Prokhorov may have made amends with the Kremlin and might be running for president to accommodate voters unhappy with the authorities to steal the thunder from the opposition.

Prokhorov said in his blog Wednesday that he would play his own game.

"Naturally, my candidacy is good for the Kremlin. Naturally, they want to play democracy and show that people have 'some kind of a choice'," he wrote.

"But we must absolutely use the authorities, too, if we don't want to just make some noise and disappear, but to change our lives for the better."

Clashes mar Egypt election, at least two dead (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? At least two people were killed and 100 wounded in Cairo on Friday as demonstrators fought troops in the worst violence since Egypt began its first free election in six decades.

In a pattern that has recurred during nine months of army rule since President Hosni Mubarak's overthrow in February, the confrontation swiftly grew as more people took to the streets.

Medical sources put the death toll at two, but a worker at a makeshift field hospital said a third person had died from gunshot wounds. The Health Ministry said one person had been killed and 105 wounded in the unrest in the city centre.

Clashes raged on after nightfall, with protesters throwing petrol bombs and stones at the cabinet building, breaking windows and security cameras. Soldiers fired at demonstrators hurling rocks at the parliament building. It was not clear if they were using rubber bullets or live ammunition.

The violence erupted the previous night when military police tried to break up a sit-in by pro-democracy activists. Anger at their rough tactics ignited clashes that quickly turned the streets around parliament into a rock-strewn battle zone.

By early afternoon, ambulance sirens were wailing as troops tried to disperse around 10,000 protesters with truncheons and what witnesses said appeared to be electric cattle prods.

Reports of beatings of well-known pro-democracy activists buzzed across social media and politicians from Islamists to liberals lined up to condemn the army's tactics.

"Even if the sit-in was not legal, should it be dispersed with such brutality and barbarity?" asked Mohamed ElBaradei, a presidential candidate and former U.N. nuclear watchdog head.

The sit-in outside the cabinet office was a remnant of far bigger protests last month around Cairo's Tahrir Square in which 42 people were killed shortly before voting began in Egypt's first election since a military council took over from Mubarak.

"The council wants to spoil the elections. They don't want a parliament that has popular legitimacy unlike them and would challenge their authority," said Shadi Fawzy, a pro-democracy activist. "I don't believe they will hand over power in June."

In Friday's disturbances, cars were set alight and part of a state building was torched.

Troops and unidentified men in plainclothes hurled rocks from the roof of one parliament building onto protesters who were throwing stones, shards of glass and petrol bombs.

Demonstrators burned piles of car tires to send up plumes of black smoke and block the view of the street from above.

The head of the military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, ordered that everyone wounded in the fighting be treated in army hospitals, state television said.

An army source said 32 security personnel had been wounded while trying to stop protesters from breaking into parliament.

Ziad el-Elaimy, a leading figure in the liberal Egyptian Bloc, who ran for parliament in Cairo, said he was beaten by security forces when he arrived to witness the scene.

When he protested, army officers told him: "To hell with you and your parliament," according to Elaimy.

BATTLEGROUND

The actual voting in the election, which is staggered over six weeks, has been mostly peaceful since it began on November 28.

A big first-round turnout had partially deflated the street protests against army rule, which prompted the government to resign and the generals to pledge to step aside by July.

On Sunday, a new cabinet is to hold its first full meeting since it was sworn in on December 7 and plans to weigh new austerity measures to address a wider-than-expected budget deficit.

Protesters have occupied an area outside the cabinet office since late November, forcing the government to meet elsewhere.

They said the army provoked the violence, which worsened after images appeared online of an activist, named as Abboudi Ibrahim, being supported by a crowd, his face badly bruised and eyes swollen and shut after he was detained by military police.

Protester Bebars Mohamed, 19, said he was at the sit-in when military police grabbed Ibrahim.

"The army pushed us away from Parliament Street and burnt the tents. They threw rocks and glass on us," he said.

ISLAMISTS LEAD IN ELECTION

The clashes broke out after two days of voting in the second round of the election on Wednesday and Thursday. Turnout again appeared high as voting moved to districts of greater Cairo, Suez, Ismailiya, Aswan and parts of the Nile Delta.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) said it expected to keep its first-round lead but that it was not clear whether its vote share would stay around 40 percent.

Early indications showed the FJP still in the lead, followed again by the hardline Islamist Salafi al-Nour party, with the liberal Egyptian Bloc in third place, state newspapers said.

The army is in charge until a presidential election in mid-2012, but parliament will have a popular mandate that the military will find hard to ignore as it oversees the transition.

Egypt's official news agency said a new civilian advisory council that was set up to offer guidance to the army generals on policy would meet later on Friday to discuss the clashes.

But two members of the council, whose creation was seen as a concession to campaigners demanding an end to army rule, resigned over the violence and said they would not attend.

Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri, who has made law and order a priority for his new interim government, has said little.

"The prime minister said he now had presidential powers, but he hasn't moved or spoken or issued clear directions," said Adel Soliman, head of Cairo's International Centre for Future and Strategic Studies. "There is complete silence from all those in power."

Downgrade threat, Geithner push EU to agree plan (AP)

BERLIN ? European nations were pressed Tuesday by a credit downgrade threat and the U.S. Treasury chief to deliver on markets' huge hopes for a solution to the 2-year-old financial crisis engulfing the continent.

Germany and France downplayed Standard & Poor's warnings to downgrade 15 eurozone nations and Europe's bailout fund. But a downgrade of their AAA ratings would complicate their efforts to restore investor confidence in Europe.

Loans from the bailout fund have rescued Ireland, Portugal and Greece, but if the fund loses its own AAA rating, it could have to charge higher rates to rescue countries in the future, making it tougher for them to recover.

That heaps more uncertainty on the fund, which many had already dismissed as too small to bail out a country like Italy. Help from abroad also seemed unlikely ? U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the Federal Reserve has no plans to give money to the International Monetary Fund to bolster Europe's bailout fund.

He is on a three-day tour of Europe to express U.S. support but also, many say, to impress on regional leaders the need to get their crisis plan right. A break-up of the eurozone would have dire consequences for the global economy.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the S&P ratings warning may not be all bad, since it could spur action at a European summit this week billed as the meeting "to save the euro."

"We take this assessment as further reassurance to do everything to achieve a good result on December 9th," Schaeuble said in Vienna.

The markets also largely shrugged off the news, perhaps because they had long ago resigned themselves to the fact that the eurozone's credit ratings might be lowered. Investors have recently been charging even big countries like France more to borrow, suggesting they did not quite believe in the AAA ratings.

S&P's first warning ? on the 15 countries' ratings ? came Monday, just hours after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged changes to the European Union treaty that would centralize decision-making on spending and borrowing for the 17 countries that use the euro.

While those reforms will likely take months or years to implement, European leaders hope they will impress the European Central Bank or the International Monetary Fund enough to persuade one or both to step into the breach quickly with more financial aid.

While there is a sense that leaders are simply scrambling to come up with the formula that induces the ECB to act, Moritz Kraemer, S&P's head of sovereign ratings for Europe, cautioned that ECB action would not in itself save the AAA ratings. He told reporters Tuesday that a credible plan to solve the crisis was also needed.

The German and French leaders shot back Tuesday that they had just unveiled one, and that the agency had jumped the gun in putting the eurozone on notice.

"What strikes me is the time-lag of this announcement," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told RTL radio. Merkel and Sarkozy's proposals are "exactly the response to one of the major questions from the ratings agency, which talks about insufficient European economic governance."

While it's true that S&P had already made its decision by Monday, when it warned leaders of it, the contents of Sarkozy and Merkel's proposals later that afternoon couldn't have been that surprising to analysts at S&P. They included introducing an automatic penalty for any government that allows its deficit to exceed 3 percent of GDP; requiring countries to promise to balance their budgets; pledging that any future bailouts would not require private bond investors to absorb a part of the costs, as was the case for the Greek bailout; and reiterating a promise not to criticize the ECB.

Those are mostly a rehash of ideas that had already been floated and, in fact, Germany's inclusion on the list of countries that could be downgraded indicates S&P was already anticipating them: Berlin's bonds are considered some of the safest in the world, the German economy has been praised for maintaining modest growth even among dire circumstances. Only the prospect of further tying Germany to weaker countries would make its bonds more suspect.

Kraemer also underscored that the warning targeted all of the eurozone countries ? with the exception of two whose bonds are already rated very low ? because the agency is concerned about a paralysis in European decision-making, which cripples all of the economies, no matter how robust.

At a press conference alongside Schaeuble in Berlin, Geithner said he is "very encouraged" by the reforms taken so far by European nations. He is on a three-day trip to Germany, France and Italy in a show of support for key countries grappling with the financial crisis.

Geithner will next go to France, where he plans meetings with Sarkozy, and also with incoming Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy who will be attending a meeting in Marsailles, then to Milan, Italy, for talks with new Italian premier Mario Monti.

He said he was "very encouraged" by reform steps taken by European nations.

"I am here in Europe to emphasize how important it is for the United States and the global economy as a whole that Germany and France succeed, along side the other nations, in building a stronger Europe," Geithner said.

U.S. sees little new in China greenhouse gas cut pledge (Reuters)

DURBAN (Reuters) ? The United States is sceptical that China's comments it could support a legally binding deal to cut its own greenhouse gas emissions marked a breakthrough in troubled climate talks, an Obama administration official said in Durban Sunday.

China gave U.N. climate talks a lift Friday by suggesting it may sign up to a legally binding deal to cut emissions, a move that could help rescue talks about the future of the Kyoto Protocol, which sets legal targets on many major economies.

"I don't think China is looking to sign up for legal obligations," the official told a small group of reporters.

"The issue for whatever point at which a legally binding agreement might be doable -- for us the foundation -- is that all major economies would need to assume obligations that had equal legal force."

The major players on the global stage have laid out their positions since the talks opened Monday, with China and the United States, the two biggest emitters, each waiting for the other to commit before agreeing to a binding deal.

Canada, Russia and Japan have said they will not renew the 1997 Kyoto pledges that expire next year, while the European Union wants a new, global pact to head off what scientists say is a global catastrophe caused by a warming planet.

The U.S. official, who asked not to be named, said Washington did not think the EU's proposal was practical. The bloc wants a roadmap for a deal to set legally binding cuts on the gases by 2015 and have a pact in effect by 2020.

FRESH DEAL

Beijing has said previously it wanted binding cuts without indicating if they would apply to China itself, which relies heavily on coal, a major source of CO2, to power its hard-charging economy.

"We have difference of a view right now with respect to the plausibility of an approach that requires the decision now on a thing to be negotiated and go into effect nine-plus years from now (and that it) must be legally binding," the official said.

The EU and Japan are proposing just that, with their envoys saying they are looking to replace Kyoto obligations with a new global accord that covers major emitters not bound by deal -- particularly the United States, China, India, Brazil.

The United States has been lambasted by environmental groups for blocking progress on a global deal to cut emissions.

"Those who are not interested in saving lives, economies and environments, like the U.S., must now stand aside and let those with the political will move forward," said Kumi Naidoo, International Executive Director, Greenpeace International.

Former Brazil captain Socrates dies at 57 (AP)

SAO PAULO ? Former Brazil great Socrates, the clever playmaker who captained Brazil at the 1982 World Cup, died Sunday. He was 57.

Known for his elegant style on the field and his deep involvement with Brazilian politics, Socrates died of septic shock resulting from an intestinal infection, according to a statement by the Albert Einstein hospital.

He had been rushed to hospital on Saturday ? the third time in four months ? and had been in critical condition in an intensive care unit, breathing with the help of a ventilator.

Socrates was twice hospitalized and placed in intensive care in the last few months, most recently in September. Both times he was admitted for hemorrhage caused by high pressure in the vein that carries blood from the digestive system to the liver.

Socrates acknowledged being a heavy drinker, even when he starred as a player in the 1980s, but said he stopped drinking earlier this year after his stints in the hospital.

Socrates was above average both on and off the field. He became a doctor after retiring from soccer and later became a popular TV commentator and columnist, always with unique and controversial opinions. He never denied his fondness for drinking, from the time he was a player until his final days.

Socrates wrote a series of columns for The Associated Press during the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, expressing his views on all aspects of the tournament, including economic and political issues in Latin America.

"It's not just about the game itself," Socrates said before the competition began. "Before anything, (soccer) is a psychological battle, the human aspect plays a significant role."

Since his time as a player, Socrates never kept his political ideas to himself and often wrote about the subject in his columns. Known as Dr. Socrates because of his practice of medicine, he was the main commentator on a weekly TV sports program and was constantly in demand from local media for interviews on varied subjects.

With Brazilian club Corinthians, Socrates spearheaded a movement called the Corinthians Democracy, in which players protested against the long periods of confinement required by the club before matches. It quickly became a broader protest that coincided with Brazil's fight to overturn a military regime in the 1980s.

Socrates, whose full name is Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, starred for Corinthians in the early 1980s, but he also played for Flamengo, Santos and Fiorentina in Italy.

The tall full-bearded playmaker captained Brazil in the 1982 World Cup in Spain and was a member of the squad in 1986 in Mexico. The 1982 Brazilian team became widely known as the best not to win a World Cup. With players like Zico and Falcao, it fell to Italy 3-2 in the second round despite needing a draw to advance to the semifinals.

Socrates was included in FIFA's list of the best 125 living soccer players in the world, a list compiled by countryman Pele. Socrates played 63 matches with the national team, scoring 25 goals.

He was known for his great vision on the field. Always clever with the ball on his feet, his trademark move was his back-heel pass, and he set up and scored many goals with it throughout his career.

Socrates briefly coached and played for Garforth Town in England in 2004.

Socrates' younger brother Rai was another great Brazilian midfielder, and he helped Brazil win the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Socrates is survived by his wife and six children.

First significant snow of winter to hit central U.S. (Reuters)

AUSTIN, Tex (Reuters) ? Up to 12 inches of snow was expected to fall in parts of Colorado and New Mexico on Saturday as a storm system moved through the central U.S., bringing what forecasters said would be the first significant snow of the season to the region.

From New Mexico to the Great Lakes, the storm that brought damaging winds to Western states and several inches of snow to the Rockies on Friday is set to drop four to seven inches of snow in other states in the region, including Nebraska and Kansas, according to forecasters.

Sioux City, Iowa was expecting up to five inches of snow by the end of the day, and police were already reporting more than a dozen car crashes on Saturday afternoon due to the slick roads.

In Omaha, Neb., the first significant snowfall of the season coincided with Saturday's college soccer playoff game featuring the hometown Creighton University and a team from a place where it snows about once every two decades or so: the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The NCAA provided yellow balls for the elite eight matchup but the afternoon game was postponed until noon Sunday to give crews time to clear the field.

The storm was expected to leave as much as 6 inches of snow in eastern Nebraska by Sunday morning.

About four inches of snow on the ground in Pueblo, Colorado on Saturday afternoon did not deter business at Shamrock Brewing Company, where patrons were enjoying a beer in spite of the winter weather, said bartender Heather Ramsey.

"There's almost a rush in business during the snowy days," she said. "It's almost like people want to get out. They don't want to get too far, but they don't stay home."

Residents of the high country in Arizona were on the lookout for snow later Saturday as well, with forecasters predicting up to eight inches in Flagstaff by Saturday night.

The same system was bringing rain to parts of north Texas, as well as parts of Michigan and Iowa.

Temperatures below freezing was causing dangerous driving conditions in Michigan, where rain was freezing on roads, according to Accuweather.com.

The northern Great Lakes can expect snow accumulation on Saturday night, forecasters said.

Travel on several interstate highways is expected to be affected by the wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain, according to Accuweather.com forecasters, including I-25, I-29, I-35, I-39, I-40, I-70, I-80, I-90 and I-94.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory on Saturday warning of potential heavy rain in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas on Saturday night in advance of a cold front expected to hit the area late Saturday or early Sunday.

A second winter storm is expected to develop on Sunday evening in New Mexico, across Texas and into Oklahoma, bringing temperatures down to the 20s for some areas and sparking the potential for snow, sleet or ice.

Also starting Sunday, forecasters will be watching for heavy rains to drench an already saturated area from Arkansas to the Ohio Valley, raising the potential for floods in that area next week, according to Accuweather.com.

Amazon canceling some Transformer Prime pre-orders, supply shortages to blame

Were you one of the eager beavers who pre-ordered ASUS' new superslate, the Transformer Prime, from Amazon? It turns out, demand for the tablet was so great that it's outstripped the retailer's supply, so Bezos' business is apparently canceling orders placed on or after November 22nd and issuing refunds. Sad news for those who had their hearts set on getting the Prime this holiday season, but maybe it's a blessing in disguise -- the delay gives you the opportunity to size up the competition before taking the quad-core plunge.
